The Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion



The Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was founded relatively early among the general hospitals of Shanghai. It was created by Professor Huang Xianming and Situ Hansun who are domestic well-known acupuncture experts in 1956. In the 1960s, the Department had close cooperation with the ENT Department and Anesthesiology Department in completing the first domestic operation under acupuncture anesthesia, which produces extensive impact. It wrote Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, New Chinese Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Definition of Acupuncture Point, Manual of TCM Practice, Collection of Medical Cases and Notes on Ancient and Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion and Secret of Magic Acupuncture and Moxibustion. 

In recent years, the Department conducted "Treatment Effect and Relevant Basic Research on Herbs-Partition Moxibustion in Treating Ulcerative Colitis", "Discussion on Mechanism of Treating Ulcerative Colitis by Herbs-Partition Moxibustion Based on Cytokines and Their Regulation of Gene Expression" and "Research on Treatment Effect and Relevant Mechanism of Treating Protrasion of the Lumbar Intervertebral Disci by Acupuncture and Moxibustion" that won the Second Prize for National Science and Technology, Third Prize for Science and Technology of Chinese Medical Association and Third Prize for Shanghai Science and Technology Advancement. The Department now is the place for cultivating postgraduates of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with one master's supervisor and three master candidates. The Department is responsible for lecturing theory of the Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion and clinical teaching task for the postgraduates and undergraduates of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Nanjing Medical University.

As one of the international acupuncture and moxibustion training bases of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it trained students 500 from dozens of nations and regions. The Department as the standardized training and teaching base for Shanghai resident doctors receives advanced students from all over the country each year. There are 11 doctors including one well-known veteran TCM doctor in Shanghai, three chief physicians, six associate chief physicians, one doctor, three masters and three master candidates. The Deputy Administrative Director of the Department (in charge of daily work) is Zhang Bimeng.
